Training for Our Volunteer Counsellors
Volunteer Counsellor Training is an extensive volunteer commitment that typically takes people several years to complete. Our program is structured this way so that we can continue to offer accessible, quality counselling services to people in the Greater Victoria Area. Before applying, please seriously consider what you are looking for in a volunteer position and whether you are willing and able to make the commitment required for this position.
It is indeed rewarding and challenging work that make a real difference to the people in our community! The training combines experiential learning and personal exploration with skills-based training.
The training will be held every Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 9:30 pm from Wednesday, September 11, 2013 to June 18, 2014, with five additional Saturday day-long training days; plus a two-day training weekend held in the Spring of 2014. The training also includes a co-counselling and supervision component starting in November.
Deadline for volunteer applications is Monday, May 13, 2013. We will accept applications after the deadline if we have not filled all 16 spaces after the first selection round. Interviews will be held from May until July and our plan is to confirm all 16 spaces with successful applicants as well as a training wait-list by the end of July.
Training will be facilitated by Sheahan Letondre. Sheahan is a graduate of the Volunteer Counsellor Training and has been a volunteer counsellor for the past 8 years. Sheahan holds a Masters Degree in Counselling Psychology and has been working in the helping professions for the past 11 years as a teacher, group facilitator and counsellor. She currently works as an addictions counsellor. To make up the facilitation team, Sheahan will be joined by two or three experienced counsellors who are also graduates of this training program. Additionally, the training will be enriched by a range of guest speakers.
